School Age / Kindergarten Programs

Kindergarten Program (4 - 5 years)
The kindergarten program is a supportive extension to your child's full-day kindergarten program. Learning is done through a variety of fun, developmentally appropriate, play-based activities.

School Age Program (6 - 12 years)
Our before and after school programs are designed to foster creativity and encourage the development of both intellectual and physical well being. We know that building self-esteem and experiencing success is important to children in this age group.

Gab Session: At the YMCA of Western Ontario we are invested in supporting children’s voices as present and future global citizens.   Research has shown that young children should be exposed to 2000 words per hour to support their healthy language and literacy development. The YMCA’s curriculum is aimed at fostering these opportunities for oral language development through continual ‘gab sessions’.  Following the child’s lead, YMCA staff engages in meaningful conversations based on their interests, activities and passions.

Arts: There are many different ways children express themselves. Utilizing different materials and tools to create artwork, exploring dance and movement as well as participating in dramatic play are all examples of expression through art. The YMCA provides children with the ability to discover and create their own projects, as well as participate in group projects using a variety of different resources. Our curriculum recognizes the vital importance the arts have on children’s development of self-confidence, creativity and cognitive skills.

Math, Science and Technology: Implementing math and science activities throughout our program gives children the opportunity to apply their skills in real life settings, as well as participate in experimental and exploratory play. Join us in building a rocket ship, creating a magic potion or measuring a dinosaur’s foot! Educators help establish a life long love of investigation, inquiry, sensory and problem solving through learning experiences that enhance a child’s natural sense of wonder.

Physical Activity: The YMCA recognizes the importance of keeping our children strong, healthy and happy. Rain or shine, morning and afternoon, our goal is to create engaging opportunities to get the children moving and having fun participating in daily physical activity. Our educators partake in planned and spontaneous physical games, activities and play, which sets the stage for children’s lifelong healthy habits.
